(not so) swift as desire

1/45
Swift as Desire Laura Esquivel

I didn’t expect much, but still, I expected more than what I got. I blame having read Like Water For Chocolate at such a young age, and then returning to Esquivel years later.

It was a drag. It wasn't THAT bad, or THAT boring; I was just expecting a little more magic. The necessary magic to live up to its synopsis (which was a million times more interesting). It wasn’t even sappy. Like how Allende would be, when relating anything that has to do with shagging, or love at first sight. And yes, it doesn’t help that the last I’ve read from Latin American literature was Allende’s Daughter of Fortune (an easy read and an easy favorite).

The sad thing is that Esquivel, with her obvious prowess in Like Water For Chocolate and Law of Love, is highly capable. So the question is, what happened here?

There goes my first book for the year. An utter disappointment.

The verdict: 4/10
